In puppet theatre, puppets are manipulated by puppeteers using rods, strings, or their hands, whereas in puppet animations, they are brought to life with a special magic trick called stop-motion animation. With this technique, animators move the puppet step by step, photographing every single move. When the photographs are played back in quick succession, this creates the illusion of movement, and the puppet comes to life before our eyes.

For the puppet’s movements to look natural and smooth in the film, very slight moves need to be made. Twelve moves per second are enough to create the appearance of fluid movement. However, since 24 frames are required for every second of an animated film, the animators photographed each move twice. This resulted in almost 100,000 photographs, which collectively form Tales from the Magic Garden.
